Training the Broken Athlete: Challenges & Solutions When Working With People in Pain

Pain is powerful. It’s destructive, de-motivating and derailing and refuses to be ignored. It causes some people to give up things they love to do and prevents others from doing what they know they should. Elite athletes retire from their careers feeling broken while others simply avoid all physical activity despite their deteriorating health. In this session we’ll discuss the challenges you face as a fitness professional when working with a client in pain and you’ll learn the strategies Ingrid discovered as she struggled to compete at an elite level during years of dealing with chronic pain. These approaches can be used for athletes and non-athletes alike—from the nationally ranked weightlifter coming back from low back and hip problems to the typical personal training client with shoulder or knee pain.
